Outside. Damien Hirst’s The Miraculous Journey: fourteen bronzes charting human development before birth, along the entrance road of a hospital for women and children. They were covered shortly after their 2013 unveiling and shown again in November 2018. See installation record W-09.
Inside. Qatar Foundation reports more than sixty artworks, including models, paintings and interactive works (Qatar Foundation, 2022; PAH-075). The individual works are not listed publicly.
The building. Designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners around three atriums inspired by the sails of traditional dhows (Visit Qatar). A contractor’s case study describes the atriums as indoor healing gardens visible from the patient rooms (Midland Lead).
What is not known. How the interior collection was selected, whether patients or staff were consulted, and whether its effects have been evaluated.
Cleveland Clinic states that its art collection extends to its Abu Dhabi hospital (Cleveland Clinic). The architects describe interiors that integrate arabesque patterns and regional colour palettes to give patients a sense of familiarity (HDR; PAH-076).
A practical example: during the pandemic, paintings donated by students for the isolation units were laminated so they could be disinfected before entering the hospital and during routine cleaning (Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, 2020). Infection control is a real constraint on art in clinical areas.
In a survey of 359 patients, family visitors and staff in three hospitals, respondents preferred single rooms, natural light, comfortable seating and a family zone by the window with views of nature.
